Are Black Americans Unfairly Judged by RATCHET Online Behavior?

In today’s digital age, it’s no secret that the actions of a few can shape the perception of many. But what happens when certain behaviors displayed online begin to define how an entire community is judged? In the latest episode of the Broken Traditions podcast, we dive into a challenging and thought-provoking discussion: Are Black Americans being unfairly judged and treated based on the ratchet behavior seen online?

The inspiration for this episode comes from a personal experience. During a recent family trip to the Bahamas, we noticed a difference in how Black Americans were treated compared to other groups. It wasn’t overt, but it was significant enough to raise questions. Has the rise of ratchet behavior online led to a global stigma that all Black Americans face when we travel?

The Global Ripple Effect of Online Behavior
Social media has made the world smaller, connecting people across borders and cultures. But it’s also made it easier for stereotypes and negative portrayals to spread far and wide. When ratchet behavior becomes viral, it doesn’t just stay in the digital world—it influences how people perceive Black Americans around the world.

This is more than just an online issue; it’s about real-world consequences. As Black Americans, we often find ourselves navigating a complex web of assumptions and judgments, especially when traveling abroad. And the question we must ask is: Are we all being held accountable for the actions of a few?

A Conversation with Rogan: A Unique Perspective
To explore this further, I’ve invited fellow content creator Rogan, who is originally from the Bahamas, to share her perspective on how Black Americans are viewed in her home country. Her insights help shed light on the impact that online behavior—whether ratchet or respectful—can have on how we are perceived globally. Rogan brings a firsthand account of what’s happening on the ground and offers a unique lens through which we can understand this complex issue.

Taking Responsibility and Shifting the Narrative
It’s easy to feel frustrated by the idea that the actions of a few can shape the reputation of an entire group. But this episode isn’t just about pointing fingers—it’s about taking control of the narrative. If toxic behavior online continues to dominate, we need to be proactive in separating ourselves from these portrayals. As a community, we must consciously create content, conversations, and representations that show the world the full scope of who we are.

This is a call to action for all of us to be intentional about what we share, support, and represent online. We need to make it clear that the behavior of a few does not define the values of many.
